Visitor Guide "A PARK FOR ALL SEASONS"

drawing by Marie Desaul

Island Beach offers an array of activities no matter what time of year.

Each season is unique. Most of our visitors enjoy the water and white sandy beaches during the summer,

BUT THERE IS SO MUCH MORE!

Spring

A paddle through the Sedge Islands surrounds you with images and sounds of unforgettable wildlife. Oyster Catchers, Egrets, Herons, Osprey, Terns, Terrapins and many species of fish create a habitat like no other. This sensitive area is specially zoned for protection so that we and future generations can enjoy and appreciate its splendor.

Osprey, also known as "fishhawks", are right at home in the Sedge Islands.

Kayak Tour of the Sedge Islands

Summer

The Sedge Islands in the southern part of the park are home to one of New Jersey's largest osprey colonies. Man made platforms provide an excellent nesting area for this magnificent bird of prey. Observe the osprey at the Spizzle Creek Bird Blind or join us on one of the kayak tours. Whether swimming in the ocean, walking the beach or trails, collecting shells, participating on a tour or simply enjoying the sun, the park is the place to be. We can't forget to mention the fantastic ocean and bay fishing at Island Beach.

Fall

As the leaves begin to change, Island Beach is once again a painted landscape. This is the time that fishermen try catching a trophy striper or a big blue and compete for a prize in a tournament. It is the time for raptors and songbirds to begin their southerly migration. Monarch butterflies feed on nectar from the seaside goldenrod before they too head south.

Winter

A winter wonderland appears. Snow laden winds dust the landscape creating icy sculptures among the cedars and pines. Wintering over birds search through the thicket for any remaining berries. Male Cardinals and the red berries of the American Holly add the final touches of vibrant color to this tranquil setting. Take a quiet walk along one of our many trails or walk along the beach and feel the force of the North Atlantic. Being here during this time, it is understandable why we say that Island Beach is a park for all seasons.

THE SUPERINTENDENT 'S WELCOME

Welcome to Island Beach State Park, a 10‑mile long barrier beach that has been spared the construction activities and development that is characteristic of most of the New Jersey shore today. The park provides visitors the opportunity to experience the shore as the entire peninsula appeared over 100 years ago. Since the area's natural characteristics have remained relatively stable, the area attracts a multitude of migrating birds and marine life and provides an environment suitable for land animals such as fox and rabbit. Those people who visit Island Beach have an excellent opportunity to learn much about the natural environment and its inhabitants. Visitors can experience the fascinating shoreline treasures by participating in a guided nature tour, taking a short walk through the maritime forest, or trying their hand at surfcasting to land that "big fish that got away the last time." Maybe a guided kayak or in depth nature tour is best for you. How about wading or swimming in the ocean waves under the protection of one of the best‑trained lifeguard squads on the Jersey shore? The staff and volunteers at Island Beach invite you to enjoy one of New Jersey's best natural treasures and we are ready to assist you and help make your visit especially enjoyable. Have a great time!

T. Mark Pitchell

Superintendent
