FRIENDS OF ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK

The Friends of Island Beach State Park announced at
their March 15th Board Meeting the following activities which
are scheduled and visitors are invited to participate in the following
activities on the dates listed.
April 23rd – Earth Day Challenge
(9:00am-1:00pm)
Island Beach State Park will be counting on
volunteers to help with the following activities: Beach Clean Up, Trimming
of Trails, Planting and Pruning of Native Plant Gardens and Cleaning Up of
the park’s Bay Side plus the Sedge Island Marine Conservation Zone. A
special video on Earth Day will be shown at the Forked River Interpretive
Center. Displays by many of the conservation organizations will be at the
1st Swimming Pavilion. Additional information can be obtained
at this location.
May 7th – The Atlantic Saltwater
Flyrodders Seminar
This seminar is being held at the Forked River
Interpretive Center. Anyone that wants to learn more about the
fascinating sport of saltwater flyrodding will enjoy the displays and
demonstrations.
May 14th – Ocean Fun Day (11:00am -
3:00pm)
New Jersey Natural Gas and the Dept. of Environmental
Protection are sponsoring this family event. There will be many
activities for all ages at the 1st Swimming Pavilion—seining,
guided bird walks, beach combing and youth fishing clinics. Displays will
be set up by some of our leading environmental organizations.
May 21st—Friends of Island Beach State
Park Yard Sale—Forked River
A yard sale to benefit Island Beach State Park will
be held at 1071 Montauk Drive, Forked River beginning at 9:00am.
Household goods, sporting equipment, books and many, many other items will
be available. This organization has collected memorabilia items from its
members. There will be something for everyone!
June 4th – National Trails Day
Island Beach State Park has more than 30 trails that
need trimming and pruning. Join us as we clear the trails and enjoy
nature’s beauty.
June 25th – Barnegat Bay National
Estuary Day
Ocean County College will be the site for the estuary
day celebration. Beginning at 9:00 am rain or shine, participants will
have the opportunity to learn about Barnegat Bay. Barnegat Bay is one of
the major estuaries on the eastern coast. Enjoy learning how it affects
wildlife and its effects on everyone in the shore community. Exhibitors
from many of the leading conservation organizations will have displays and
handouts.
September 11th—Friends of Island Beach
State Park Beach Plum Festival
The 1st Swimming Pavilion at Island Beach
will be the site for the Beach Plum Festival that signifies the coming of
fall. Join us as we pick the ripe beach plums that delight the palate or
try a sample of beach plum jam. Local crafters will be displaying their
goods and the major environmental and non-profit groups will also be
there. Games for children, plum picking, kayaking tours, bird banding
demonstrations, aquarium programs and lectures on birds and plants will
make this a great day for everyone!
Dune Grass Planting at Island Beach State Park
The park’s dune grass planting as begun. With the
help of volunteers from the girl and boy scouts, environmental clubs,
local schools, the Beach Buggy Association and the Friends of Island
Beach, 33,500 plants will be planted on the primary dunes. This activity
is vital in rebuilding and stabilizing the dunes at the park. The next
beach grass planting program will be held in October. Any groups or
individuals that are interested in helping should contact the park’s
Nature Center at 732-793-1698.
